Norfolk

The east-facing walled garden of this Grade II-listed flint and brick coastal cottage is split over two levels. The brief was to create a private, restful space that included a water feature, and to use reclaimed and traditional materials. The salvaged waterspout and font and the Anduze vases, sourced in France, integrate with the locally crafted, timber-framed and lead-roofed pavilion and day bed. To punctuate the geometry of the upper level, four Buxus ball forms and an Osmanthus multi-stem tree were planted; on the lower level, fragrant flowering species and aromatic leaves bring peace and tranquillity.

Around the front of the house, exposed as it is to North Sea winds, salvaged galvanised steel planters each contain a discreet irrigation system. A largely evergreen and wind-tolerant planting scheme includes rosemary, Agapanthus, Narcella, Teucrium and Gaura.
