Kensington
This east-facing garden had an old garage backing onto the street and was on two distinct, but unusable, levels. The brief was to integrate the new levels with the newly refurbished house and to design a garden building to replace the garage.
Inspired by traditional orangeries, the garden room now offers a peaceful retreat and is an attractive feature when viewed from the house. Sawn six-sided York stone forms the mainstay of the hard-standing surfaces and artificial turf makes for a practical children’s play area. Planting is confined to the beds either side of the upper lawn area with a soft palate of colours using the multi-stem Prunus serrula [Himalayan cherry], Brunnera macrophylla and Abelia grandiflora dome forms.
Contemporary white planters and dining furniture sit peacefully within the space.
