Dorset

This newly built property, a Grand Designs House of the Year finalist, with its magnificent views across the Dorset countryside, was designed by the award-winning Strom Architects and required them to carefully place the house within the sensitive surroundings of an old stone quarry and protected trees.

The challenge was to formulate a design for the garden that would accommodate the clients’ need for inclusive movement around the property over steep, challenging terrain and to minimalise maintenance with a naturalistic planting scheme.

As the house had embraced the use of renewable energies, the garden has a rainwater-harvesting tank to collect rainwater and grey water for irrigation use. This also helped with the establishment of newly planted trees and hedging through their early years.

The sculpting of the contoured banks, or lynchets, was inspired by the Iron Age examples seen throughout the region. Plateau lawns and interlinking grass paths help nestle the house into the surrounding countryside effortlessly.
